Dorset Collegiate is named after the Dorset Eskimos, a race of native people who frequented this area sometime between 2700 and 1000 years ago. The school opened to serve the communities of Brighton, Triton, Pilley's Island and Robert's Arm on September 6, 1977. It was officially opened on November 25 of that year by Premier Frank D. Moores.  Beginning September 1998, under the newley restructed system of education in Newfoundland and Labrador, all students in grades 9 - 12 from Miles Cove to Brighton attend Dorset.

Dorset Collegiate is under the jurisdiction of the Baie Verte, Central, Connaigre School District. In the 1999-2000 school year, Dorset has a school population of 215 students.
